Naughty Readers: Readers love to know more about their authors. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Shandra: Ah, this is one question that always gives me trouble, I never know what to say. I live in the mountains of Southwest Virginia now, having moved here last year. I live a pretty sedate life – I go to work, I write, I like to go running, especially when it's cool and misty. I like to lie outside in the dark and look at the stars. 

Naughty Readers: Do you have a day job?

Shandra: Yes, I work as a waitress at two restaurants. I don't mind the work (except when I have to work breakfast at ungodly morning hours), I enjoy meeting people, but I hope to one day write fulltime. Then again, I suppose most writers have that dream. 

Naughty Readers: Some of us have things we do to get into the writing frame of mind like music, or drinks. Do you have anything special you do to get into the writing mood?


Shandra: This will sound kinda odd, but I play Bejeweled. When I'm getting ready to write for a long stretch, for two or three hours at a time, I play Bejeweled for ten minutes or so. I just like playing, and it clears my mind. I get a big old Diet Mountain Dew or Pepsi Max, play Bejeweled for a bit, then I write. But if I don't have that much time to write, if I only have a thirty minute or hour stretch, I don't do anything, I just sit down and dive in.

Naughty Readers:  Where do you keep story ideas? Where do they come from?

Shandra: Most of the time I just keep them in my head. I'm always coming up with different ideas, working out story lines while I'm driving to or from work, taking a shower, running, wherever I am. As for where the ideas come from, that's hard to say. If I'm in the midst of writing erotica, I tend to see everything through the lens or eroticism and come up with those sorts of stories. If I'm thinking about horror, then everything I see and hear spurs some sort of horrorish story idea.

     Welcome to Berwick Castle, home of Nicholas and Kathryn Herron, the Duke and Duchess of Berwick. We are in the family solar, where the family sleeps, bathes, and spends much of its time when not busy conducting the business of a thriving castle. The floors are blue glazed Portuguese tiles, covered here and there with silk carpets from Persia. The walls are stone, hung with many colorful tapestries to help help keep down the cold. One corner is a tower. That is the bathing area. Hung with silk sheets to allow for privacy, the floor is raised to form a dais. In the middle is a copper bathing tub large enough for three people. The area is warmed by coal braziers around the tub. An enormous fireplace takes up much of one wall and today a blazing fire is sending its heat out into the large room. In front of the fireplace is a heavy oak table with four chairs, where the Duke and Duchess and their partner, Rolf Torgesson, play chess and other games, and occasionally dine. High above the floor is a delicately-arched vaulted ceiling, as fine as can be found in any of England's cathedrals. The top half of the two outside walls feature tall stained glass windows depicting scenes from daily life in Berwick Castle. Against one wall is a massive, four-poster bed with crimson velvet curtains that can enclose it completely for privacy.

     Welcome everyone and thank you for stopping in! I hope each you enjoy my story of Cassi and Gabe. I got to sit down recently with the handsome hero of my book, Gabriel Jackson, to find out more about him for my readers. We love getting inside the head of our characters and want to know what makes them tick.

Tonya:  You left your family’s ranch in Montana to live in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. What made you move?

Gabe: My father and older brother ran the ranch there with several great guys who help out. I wanted a change so I got into the rodeo circuit and found I enjoyed the calf and steer roping. I tried bull riding but decided I like having my brains and body in one piece. Jackson Hole was one of the rodeo stops and that’s where I met Blake Mitchell and some of his ranch hands who also got involved in the local rodeo.

Tonya: How did you end up working at Blake’s ranch?

Gabe: One of his guys talked me into helping with the cattle herd, training their horses and keeping the younger guys in line. Working on the ranch is where I met Blake’s daughter, Cassandra. We got along well and had many of the same interests. Our chemistry wasn’t bad either! (wink)

Tonya: How did her father take to the idea of his daughter seeing one of the cowboys?

Gabe: I got along quite well with her father and after several years of working for him, I became his ranch manager when his interests went beyond the ranch. Before all that, Cassi wanted to learn calf roping and became quite good at it. We got closer and built a relationship that worked for us…until her parents divorced and her mother took Cassi to Tennessee.

Tonya: Hhmm…that sounds tough, especially if the two of you had a good relationship. Did you stay in touch?

Gabe: (long pause, Gabe stares at me)  An incident happened that involved the four of us and another woman. I won’t go into that here. We all make mistakes; I’d rather forget that happened. Your readers will have to read our story.

Tonya: Okay then…What do you do on the ranch to stay in such good shape? I’m guessing more than office duties!

Gabe: I’m not one to sit behind a desk. I get my job done there and then head out to help the guys. We move bales of hay, clean out the stalls, mend fence lines on the property, work with new horses and rope a few steer so our rodeo skills stay top notch!

Tonya: (squirming in my seat, finding it hard to keep my gaze from roaming over his arms and chest) What qualities do you look for in a woman?

Gabe: She has to have a mind of her own, be comfortable with the life choices she’s made, know what she wants out of life and not be afraid to take chances. I want a woman by my side who can be a partner to me, someone I can talk to and share life with. I’m a sucker for green eyes…and Cassi has all of these attributes.

Tonya: It sounds to me like you’re still stuck on Cassi.

Gabe: You could say that, but she told me never to contact her when she left ten years ago and I’ve honored her wish. It’s been hard but I held onto hope that one day she’d return to the ranch, so I’ve stayed there.

Tonya:  That’s a long time to wait for one woman! Did you date other women?

Gabe: Not many. The ranch keeps me busy and if you get a woman in your head, sometimes other aspects of your life fall apart…unless she’s your soul mate. I met her once…she left…and I’ve not met another woman like Cassi in ten years, so I stay busy on the ranch.

Tonya: That tells me that you’re a one-woman man, hon. Gabe, thank you for taking time out from your hard work on the ranch to chat with me.

      Welcome to our Boudoir! If you've not heard about my erotic western series yet, get comfy. I'm working hard to get this completed so you can curl up with my cowboys and the women who love them. As I write, the story pulls me to the west and onto the ranch so I'm hoping that it'll do the same for each of you when you read it.      Readers have requested an erotic romance from me that doesn't include any Dom/sub or bondage. So I wanted to try my hand at creating irresistable cowboys and women who taunt them. But how can I write about men who ride and rope and not tie up my cowboys? I'm trying hard to keep on track with reader wishes so stay with me!

 

     My heroine is strong-will and sassy Cassandra Harrison who moved to Tennessee with her mother ten years ago when her parents divorced. Her step-father has trained her how to run a ranch, keep the ranch hands in line, and to shoot better than a man! That alone has kept more than a few cowboys from tearing down the walls around her heart. She doesn't let many close and she's dead set on letting another man tear her heart apart ever again.

 

       The love of her life, or at least who she thought was, betrayed her ten years ago and made her move to Tennessee an easy move. Thoughts of the love they once shared were locked in a box in the back of her mind. Because of a recent letter, they're drifting out to torment her when she doesn't want to think about him.

     A letter from an attorney out west is demanding a meeting with her, prompted by her father. She's not seen him, nor heard from him, in the ten years she's been gone and suddenly he's demanding she fly two thousand miles without a good reason?

While answering the interview questions for Tonya and Brenda, I’m sitting at the breakfast table overlooking the beautiful windswept moors of Wuthering Heights, located in the Northern part of England in Yorkshire County.  The fir trees are bowed by the constant breeze.  The ground often trembles from the unearthly passions that inhabit this vibrant landscape.

Naughty Reader’s: Tell us a bit about yourself  that our readers might not know.

IJ: In addition to being a writer, I’ve been an award winning collegiate tennis coach.

Naughty Reader’s: What made you want to become a writer?

IJ: I started out developing a love for language and stories by being an avid reader.  In late high school, I started translating that love into stories of my own.

Naughty Reader’s: Please share a bit about your new release  without giving away any spoilers.

IJ: WUTHERING NIGHTS is out now as an e-book and will be in bookstores on April 23 as a trade paperback and audio book.  It is an erotic retelling of Emily Bronte’s classic Wuthering Heights.  What makes this book different from other typical mashups, is that it’s not a lot of verbatim text with some sex thrown in.  I dove deeply into the story and produced a novel that stays true to the original language, themes, and characters, but has many new plot twists and turns that help make the eroticism more organic and heightens the romance.

Romantics everywhere have been enthralled by Emily Bronte's classic novel of the tragic love between beautiful, spirited Catherine Earnshaw and dark, brooding Heathcliff. The restrained desire between these two star-crossed lovers has always smoldered on the page. And now it ignites into an uncontrollable blaze. In WUTHERING NIGHTS, writer I.J. Miller reimagines this timeless story to reveal the passion between Catherine and Heathcliff--in all its forbidden glory.

Naughty Reader’s: Do you write under a pen name?

IJ: Yes.

Naughty Reader’s: What types of hero or heroine do you like best?

IJ: Ones that are complex.  Not simply all good and perfect.  I like revealing the strengths as well as the flaws.  Makes for a far more interesting story.

Naughty Reader’s: Tell us about a typical day in your life as a writer.

IJ: Get up, shower.  Log on usually to take care of Facebook, Twitter, and email business.  Do my daily workout.  Eat breakfast.  Go back to my desk to work on my current writing project.  Finish late.  Often miss lunch.  Prepare dinner for my significant other.

Naughty Reader’s: Do your books have a common theme or are they all different?

IJ: What is common is that the sexual scenes are all used to reveal character and story, never gratuitous.  I think all of my protagonists are usually looking to gain some control over their lives and reshape their living into a more fulfilling existence.

Naughty Reader’s: How long does it take you to write and then edit a story?

IJ: Could be anywhere to three to six months for the first draft of a novel.  Although I was given a six week deadline for WUTHERING NIGHTS, three more weeks for rewriting.  That was a totally different project.  I was truly possessed by the characters and story and very little else registered in my life during that time but writing this book.  Short stories usually sit in my brain for awhile and by time I’m ready to write they usually come out in one sitting.  The editing and rewriting usually take longer.

Naughty Reader’s: Do you have to be alone to write?

IJ: Yes.  I need all other business to be taken care of as well.  My mind must be clear.

Naughty Reader’s: How do you go about naming characters?

IJ: I like names that have some association to characteristics or personality traits my characters have.  A strong heroine in my novel WHIPPED: Leigh Stern.  An abuser in a short story I once wrote: Anthony Pfister.

Naughty Reader’s: Is it easier to write about the characters if you find pictures of them before you write or do you write then find character pictures?

IJ: I have a strong background in screenwriting as well.  So I usually start off seeing everything.

Naughty Reader’s: How do you pick locations for your stories?

IJ: Of course I like a locale that fits the story, but it also must be a place I’m familiar with so I can add the details that will bring full richness to the story.

Naughty Reader’s: What are you working on now and what should readers be looking forward to from you in the future?

IJ: I’m working on a New Adult erotic romance for the 18-25 crowd called CELINE’S SOLUTION, about a college girl who gets her final, senior year education from her young English Professor who is both a master of passion and a troubled, secretive soul.  Before she can know for sure whether she has found true love or needs to move on, she must unravel all of his mysteries.
