Awesome Interview with Ana Hart, Erotic Paranormal Author

Congratulations to Tammy Ramey; the winner
 for the eBook drawing!

We're in the forest clearing where Daniel Webb, the main character in Ana Hart's recent release, "Reborn", first met Sarelia, the elder spirit of the Lower World who cursed him with his supernatural powers. There's an air of foreboding here, of unfinished business, and the imprint of Sarelia's energy still lingers in the air. The very forest seems to thrum with an otherworldly power, like the Veil separating the mortal world from the Spirit Plane might be weaker here.

Ana is here this week to share with us "Reborn" and why she loves to write. There's Ana now sitting by the stream. Let's join her!

Naughty Reader’s: Tell us a bit about yourself  that our readers might not know.

Ana: Oh, man! Things that people might not know about me? Uh... um...

I hate shaving my legs in the winter time (what's the point?!). I only write with black pens (I seriously hate blue ink). I love dubstep (I'm listening to “Doomsday” by Nero right now!). I watch French cartoons in my spare time (Didou is my favorite!). Oh, and I know way more about Italian Renaissance costuming than I probably should. And about perfumery. And embroidery. And I can make my own bow and arrows from a hunk of wood. And, uh, lots of other useless stuff.

Naughty Reader’s: (both Brenda and Tonya nod their heads) Totally agree no shaving in the winter and then yelling “Timber!” come summer. What made you want to become a writer?

Ana: Well, I come from a family of writers. Both my parents were journalists. My sister went into journalism, too. My brother writes in his free time. And I write when my muse makes me (or, uh, my publisher. Whichever comes first). But seriously, writing's always been a part of my life. I love reading. I love words. I love weaving new stories into which people can escape and realize their own fantasies. When I was younger, I often escaped into the books I was reading and now, as an adult (well, I'm only technically an adult), I want to give other people that same joy I always knew.

Naughty Reader’s: Please share a bit about your new release, Reborn, without giving away any spoilers.

Ana:  Well, it's about this dude named Daniel Webb. You see, Daniel's just your average guy. He's a twenty-something year-old living in this tiny ass backwoods town in Arkansas. He graduated from high school, but dropped out of college, and now he's working as a night cook in the back of a local coffee shop. You know, living the dream and all that shit. But totally normal.

Except for the fact that Sarelia, an elder spirit of the Lower World, just cursed him with supernatural powers a few months ago. And his girlfriend just dumped him. And he just met this really sexy (but totally mysterious) girl named Alyssa Vega at the local bar who seems strangely familiar to him...

Reborn is the first book in my One Powerful Addiction series and it's a face-paced paranormal romance written entirely from a first-person male POV (save for the half-page third-person prologue) and sprinkled with loads of cheesy humor, snappy dialogue, and smokin' hot sex scenes. Throw in some supernatural powers, goofy best friend sidekicks, and badass female leads, and you have yourself a fun and unique read that will have you racing towards the end.

Naughty Reader’s: Is Daniel Webb based off anyone you know in real life?

Ana:  Daniel is a mish-mash of myself, my brother, my boyfriend, and two of my best friends to form a big, flaming dish of awesomesauce. I really love Daniel as a character. I wish he was a real person. We'd totally be friends.

Naughty Reader’s: What inspired you to write a romance strictly from the point-of-view of the hero?

Ana:  Well, I really just wanted to do something different. For years, I've picked up traditional romances... and I've been disappointed by them all. I wanted to present a more believable hero and I thought the best way to do that would be to let the readers completely inside his head. Daniel is the product of days and weeks of research, rewrites, and my guy friends being subjected to really uncomfortable questions. But I think it paid off ;-)

Naughty Reader’s: Do you write under a pen name?

Ana:  Ha! Yes. Ana Hart is my pen name. I picked it because it's short, easy to pronounce, spell, and remember. I also write YA under my real name, but for obvious reasons, I try to keep the two separate.

Naughty Reader’s: What types of hero or heroine do you like best?

Ana:  For heroes, I like the real guys – the guys who aren't perfect, who make mistakes because they're human beings, and then who fix them because they want to better themselves. I really can't stand cookie cutter heroes. You know the ones I'm talking about. The ones who look like Adonis and can do no wrong. I also like bad boys with plenty of tattoos and facial piercings as a general rule ;-)

For heroines, I like the strong, badass women who can take care of themselves.

What I really can't stand is when you have a heroine who's strong and independent... but then the second a man walks into her life, she suddenly becomes useless. It irks me to no end. I also can't stand historical romances that feature women acting drastically outside their stations. Research history, people. Sure, there were the exceptions, but for the most part, women stayed within their social roles. But they still kicked ass. Women had a lot more power than we might think they did (even without having been “secretly taught how to use a sword and bow and blah blah blah by their dad”... come on, how many girls do you think actually did that? It would have been drastically unladylike to have exerted that kind of energy out in the sunlight where they might ruin their valuable pale complexion or, heaven forbid, get calluses and thus mark them to be lower class.) Overall, I wish authors would research more before delving into their historical romances, but that's another rant altogether.

Naughty Reader’s: Tell us about a typical day in your life as a writer.

Ana:  My day starts at 3 A.M. and usually doesn't end until midnight. Packed into that day are two day jobs, writing, various errands, more writing, gardening, and then maybe some “networking” (ie. goofing off on Twitter). I'm always super busy.

Naughty Reader’s: (Brenda) 3 AM? Steve and I are just going to bed! LOL Do your books have a common theme or are they all different?

Ana:  Hmmm... so far, all my stories have leaned more towards the fantastical. Fantasy/sci-fi/paranormal/whateva you want to call it have always been my favorite genres. I love creating new worlds and just generally bullshitting my way along to make something totally awesome.

Naughty Reader’s: How long does it take you to write and then edit a story?

Ana: Honestly, it depends. A few months if I really put my mind to it? I once wrote a 3,000+ word short story in three hours, edited it in one, submitted it, and had it sold within a week. But I must have had superpowers that day or something, because that kind of thing doesn't usually happen to me.

Naughty Reader’s: (Tonya) Too bad you didn’t bottle some of those superpowers that day. I sure could use some. My clone is a no show! Do you have to be alone to write?

Ana: Yes! Definitely yes. I have the attention span of an ADHD squirrel, so I have to be alone to keep myself from being distracted.

Naughty Reader’s: How do you go about naming characters?

Ana:  I have a name generator on my computer. No, seriously. I generate most of my names. Or, for more modern names, I just make them up. I have several names I really like and I have to be careful that I'm not using them in every story I write, but I do sometimes recycle them.

Naughty Reader’s: Is it easier to write about the characters if you find pictures of them before you write or do you write then find character pictures?

Ana:  A bit of both. I usually just write and then find character pictures, but for the second book in my One Powerful Addiction series, Addicted, I was having the hardest time writing one scene because I couldn't find the right word to describe this female character's skin tone. So I spent hours scouring the internet until I found a good picture for me to go off of. The word I went with? Tawny. Hours wasted for the word tawny. Sheesh.

Naughty Reader’s: (Brenda) But you knew you had to have the right word. It’s good to be persistant. (Tonya) That’s right Ana and Tawny is one of those colorful words that tantalize the mind. How do you pick locations for your stories?

Ana:  If I'm writing in a modern setting, I like to write what I know, which means it'll probably be based in the southern United States. For everything else, I just make it up, haha. Seriously. Bullshitting is my speciality!

Excerpt for Reborn:
The young woman gave a shudder of ecstasy and fell away from the shimmering form of the other. Exhausted from their furious lovemaking, she laid in the grass for several long minutes before she finally whispered, “Thank you, Mistress.”

When the elder spirit smiled, the expression was filled with heat and yet lacking in warmth. Moving to kneel beside the girl, she brushed a few sweat-soaked strands of hair from her face.

“My dear, I have a favor to ask of you.”

Without hesitation, the young woman nodded and pushed herself to a sitting position. “Ask it. I would do anything for you.”

Sarelia beamed, reveling in the girl's obedience, and she drew her in for another kiss, for another taste of the power the girl so loved and craved. Pulling away ever-so-slightly, the elder spirit breathed against the other's warm mouth and whispered, “I need you to keep a close eye on someone for me, dear.” Sarelia's tongue flicked out to lick along the curve of the girl's parted lips, tasting of her own sweet juices still lingering there. “A man.”

The girl shuddered once more in the elder spirit's grasp and her lips parted further, welcoming in the possessive plunge of Sarelia's tongue. “Who?”

“Daniel,” the elder spirit softly purred. They fell into each other once again, fingers busy against each other's bodies as they raced towards equally desperate climaxes. “Daniel Webb.”

Meet Natasha Moore - Erotic Romance Author!

Congratulations to Jamie Salisbury for winning
a copy of Plaything!

Natasha Moore
Erotic Romance

Hi everyone! Brenda, Steve, Tonya and Natasha here! Come on up on the porch with us for today's interview! We're sitting on Natasha's back porch on a swing her hubby bought for her and we promise to take turns! We have a beautiful view of the lake and the crazy squirrels and rabbits are dashing around the backyard. It’s her favorite place to be and if only the weather in western NY would co-operate, she could sit here year ‘round. Hope you enjoy the view as well. Grab your drinks and let's get started!

Naughty Reader’s:  Natasha, thank you for having us here and being with us all week. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Natasha:  Thank you! Let's see...I hate to travel. That’s not to say I don’t like to get out of the house. Visit new places. See new things. I do. It’s getting there that I don’t like. The long drives on the busy freeways. Annoying airport terminals and crowded airplanes. I wish we’ve gotten technologically advanced enough to step into a booth and say “Beam me to the beach, Scottie.” And I’d be wherever I want to be.

Naughty Reader’s: It'd be nice if we didn't have to wait long for that machine! What made you want to become a writer?

Natasha: I’ve been a writer since I was in grade school. I’ve just always loved books. Loved reading. Loved making up my own stories. Still do and still am.

Naughty Reader’s: Well your series sounds exciting for us. Please share a bit about your new release, Plaything, without giving away any spoilers.

Natasha:  Plaything is the final story in my Paolo’s Playhouse series from Samhain. Readers got a little peek of Paolo in the first three stories of the series. Plaything gives the sexy Italian his own story.

Naughty Reader’s:  Do you write under a pen name?

Natasha:  I do. When I first sold, I was working in a very visible customer service position and I wanted to keep the two parts of my life separate.

Naughty Reader’s:  That's so understandable. We love to write what we do but sometimes others don't get it. What types of hero or heroine do you like best?

Natasha:  Ooh. That’s tough. I love feisty, sassy heroines. They get the best lines – all the things I wish I could say, but never dared, or never thought of until I was home at night. I love all heroes, although I do have a special place in my heart for the tortured hero. Sigh…

Naughty Reader’s: They give us someone to nurture! Tell us about a typical day in your life as a writer.

Natasha:  I’ve yet to have a typical day LOL I work a full-time day job, so my writing life has to revolve around that. I try to get a few pages written after dinner but it doesn’t always work out that way. The weekends are better (unless I have too many errands or chores or…) So I fit in my writing whenever I can, on lunch breaks at work, before or after dinner, whenever I can on the weekends. Long stretches of quiet time would be great, but if I’d waited for them, I’d never have finished anything.

Naughty Reader’s: Do your books have a common theme or are they all different?

Natasha: I think the only common theme is the romance. Oh and sexy, even my straight contemporaries are sexy.

Naughty Reader’s: How long does it take you to write and then edit a story?

Natasha:  It depends on the story. My very first release, Nothing to Fear, now that story seemed to write itself. I probably only spent a few weeks on it. Now the novel I just sold, Silken Canvas, which releases Dec 25th, that book took me a couple years, but it went through a lot of changes during that time, and I did work on other things in between revisions.

Naughty Reader’s:
Do you have to be alone to write?

Natasha:  It would be nice but… (see prior question about my writing life)

Naughty Reader’s:  How do you go about naming characters?

Natasha:  They usually name themselves. Or I just keep trying them on until one seems to fit.

Naughty Reader’s: Is it easier to write about the characters if you find pictures of them before you write or do you write then find character pictures?

Natasha:  The pictures of the characters come in my head – sometimes I’ll find a picture afterwards that’s a close match, but not usually.

Naughty Reader’s:
How do you pick locations for your stories?

Natasha:  The story tells me. Really. I sometimes use a place I’ve visited. Most are places similar in some way to where I live.
Excerpt of Plaything:

Paolo’s Playhouse. A new playground for consenting adults. Playrooms for every interest or desire. Bring your own plaything or we can provide one for you. We’ll help your fantasies come to life. Inquiries, phone…
The newspaper in Julianne’s hands rattled and she dropped it to the table as if it had burned her trembling fingers. The discreet ad at the bottom of the page grabbed her attention and wouldn’t let her go. Her heart raced and her nipples prickled. Words seemed to flash before her eyes.
        Playhouse. Plaything. Fantasies.
She flipped the paper over and pushed away from the table. The marinated chicken breast and tossed salad sat, uneaten, in front of her. She didn’t feel like dinner any longer, didn’t even want the Chardonnay she’d poured to try to relax. The jumbled nerves in her stomach left no room for food. But the words kept running through her mind.
        Playhouse. Plaything. Fantasies.
Sure, she had fantasies. Who didn’t? Leather cuffs and silky ropes, sweaty skin and long-fingered masculine hands were the images that danced behind her closed eyes each night when she used her trusty vibrator. Sometimes she thought her fantasies were the only things that kept her sane. But that didn’t mean she’d ever try to act them out in real life. Not again.
Julianne paced her apartment, restlessness buzzing through her system like an itch she couldn’t scratch. What was wrong with her? She didn’t have time to think about her sexual fantasies now. She had work to do. Work was what kept her sane. Work. Not fantasies.
She took refuge in the spare bedroom she’d converted into her workshop. Usually she felt happy there, but tonight the room seemed smaller, darker. The air was stale and stagnant. Still, she flipped through sample after sample, searching for the perfect drapery fabric for her current project. Nothing seemed right tonight. Everything felt flat, boring. But she couldn’t admit that work wasn’t enough anymore.
What would she have then?
She finally found a beautiful gold-and-green brocade that would be ideal for the draperies in the Olsons’ new dining room. And she had the perfect drapery ties to go with it. She’d gotten them on sale months ago, waiting for the right project. She opened the cabinet drawer and pulled out a length of braided cord.
Her breath caught as she ran the silky gold cord through her fingers. Slowly, without even realizing it, she wrapped it around her wrist, once, twice, and pulled tight. She stared at the dark gold cord wrapped around her pale skin as if wondering where it had come from. She tugged it again. Illicit thrills shivered over her skin, prickling her nipples and sending her sex throbbing.
We’ll help your fantasies come to life.
Bondage. She could admit to herself that being tied up during sex had always been her secret fantasy, but could she admit it to someone else? She’d tried once, with a guy she thought she could trust. She’d gathered up all her nerve and timidly asked him to tie her wrists to the headboard before they had sex. Bill had recoiled in shock, horrified that she would think he’d ever want to abuse a woman in that way. He’d stared at her as if there were something wrong with her and had refused to listen as she’d tried to explain about fantasies and consensual kink.
She’d never mentioned it again to another soul.
In fact, she’d buried it so deep she’d thought it had been forgotten, but the emotional scars from that disaster had probably colored every lousy relationship she’d had since then. She’d never again dared ask for what she wanted in the bedroom. Never dared believe she could actually experience real bondage, even once. She’d resigned herself to a boring sex life and inventive fantasies of her own making.
Somehow Julianne found herself back at the kitchen table, the cord still wrapped tightly around her wrist. She flipped the paper back over and read the words again. Could this be her chance to live out her fantasy? She grabbed the glass of wine still sitting on the table and drank in down in several long gulps. Then before she could think twice, she snatched up her phone and punched in the number.
“This is Paolo’s Playhouse. How may I help you?”

Naughty Reader's:  ooooo...than is hot! Love a book that touches those secret fantasies we all harbor and try to hide! ttssssss!

Natasha:  Ladies...and Steve! Thank you for having me here and thank you all for stopping in this week! Don't forget to leave a comment to be in the drawing!
Contest giveaway:  I’ll be giving away a copy of Plaything to one lucky commenter who also leaves their email addy so I can reach you! Good luck and let's start the chatter!

Malia Mallory - Erotic Author

Malia Mallory

Erotic Romance Author

Thank you for stopping in to meet Malia. With having a new baby in the house, it isn't always possible to do the things we want to so we're glad she's able to be with us this week. Lucky Malia lives in Hawaii and loving it! Grab your drinks or Mai Tai's and let's get started.

Naughty Reader’s:  Tell us a bit about yourself that our readers might not know.

Malia: Thank you so much for hosting me this week! I started self-publishing my erotic writing last year. I've been writing on and off, both romance and erotica, for a long time but only got serious recently about publishing it. I had submitted a bit here and there and entered a few contests, but now I'm actually selling work. In previous careers, I've been both a proofreader and a copy-editor and these skills have been very useful.
I live in Hawaii with my husband, my daughter and our cutie dog. I spend my "free" time, such as it is, cooking, reading and watching documentaries (and washing diapers).

Naughty Reader’s:  What made you want to become a writer?

Malia:  As a child, my teachers always encouraged me to write more. I wrote many silly stories as a little girl and I still have some of them. When I got to college, I had some tough, but very good, professors. They helped me to improve my writing. I found once I began working, my employers valued my writing skills and I began writing more and more. Sometimes I was writing all day at work and then coming home to write stories for relaxation and entertainment. It might sound like this was easy, but in fact, I find writing to be hard. I think that is part of what attracts me to it. I have to work at it.

Naughty Reader’s: Please share a bit about your new release from The ABCs of Erotica without giving away any spoilers.

Malia:  My most recent release from The ABCs of Erotica is called R is for Revenge. It started out as R is for Rubenesque. I changed the title because the focus wasn't on the heroine's body but her actions. The heroine is saddled with a horrible boss who treats her quite badly and eventually fires her. Grace's new love interest has a prior relationship with her former boss and gives her the opportunity to get back at her. Have you ever wanted to be able to spank your boss?

Naughty Reader’s:  Do you write under a pen name?

Malia: Yes, Malia Mallory is a pseudonym. I am toying with having a different one for my longer, erotic romance. I haven't decided yet.

Naughty Reader’s:
What types of hero or heroine do you like best?

Malia:  I like my characters to be relatable. That is not to say that you can't have the occasional billionaire, race car driver, but I enjoy writing about regular people. I like the hero to be strong but not overpowering, unless of course I'm writing about a Dominant. I definitely like my heroines to be strong as well. They might not always know what they want, but they are usually looking for it.

Naughty Reader’s:  Tell us about a typical day in your life as a writer.

Malia:  With a newborn in the house, no day is typical anymore. I try to go for a walk in the morning with the baby and the dog to clear my head. When we get back, I eat breakfast while checking my Twitter, Facebook, e-mail and doing promotion. In the late morning, the baby typically takes a nap and I can try to get some writing done if I'm lucky. Lately, I've been experimenting with voice recognition software to help me with my productivity. In fact, I'm using it right now. Score one for me to feed a baby while I'm completing an interview.

Naughty Reader’s:  Do your books have a common theme or are they all different?

Malia:  Some of my books do have a common theme like The ABCs of Erotica. Thus far, I have completed some of the stories in the series. For example, A is for Anal, B is for Beach, C is for Cock Ring, D is for Domination, and R is for Revenge have all been released. There are a number of other stories in the series that are in various stages of completion. Some examples would include G is for Gigolo and H is for Hand Job. Some of the books in this series have characters in common and many, but not all, have a BDSM theme.
On the other hand, I have some stand-alone stories like Santa's Backdoor Baby and Mia's Cop Craving. Mia's Cop Craving is shaping up to be a trilogy. As for Clockwork Caning, I haven't quite decided if it will be a longer story or series.

Naughty Reader’s:  How long does it take you to write and edit a story?

Malia: This is a tough question. I really wish I were a faster writer. It depends on what's going on in my life. Sometimes I'm able to get a good amount of work done quickly on the story but at other times, it seems to take forever. I've been working on two stories, the sequel to Mia's Cop Craving and Clockwork Caning, an erotic steam punk novella. Both of these have been in the works for several months. Only recently have I made some progress in moving forward. I think I have a good excuse though; I did give birth to a new baby. Fortunately, my editor is very flexible and has a quick turnaround time.

Naughty Reader’s:
Do you have to be alone to write?

Malia: I do not necessarily have to be alone, but I do try to keep distractions to a minimum. I think over time I will have to adjust this and be able to write under less than ideal circumstances in order to make progress.

Naughty Reader’s:
How do you go about naming characters?

Malia: Sometimes I just use names that I like. Other times I try to find a name that I think fits the character. I do try to avoid names of people that I know well so it does not influence my characterization.

Naughty Reader's: Is it easier to write about the characters if you find pictures of them before you write or do you write then find character pictures?

Malia:  I do try to find pictures first at times. Usually with longer works, I do try to select a picture and do an outline of character traits. For short stories and novellas, I do not always go into so much detail. Not all of my covers have photographs of the characters, so sometimes there is no specific picture.

Naughty Reader’s:
How do you pick locations for your stories?

Malia:  I often use places where I have visited or lived. That makes it much easier to describe the setting. Luckily, I used to travel for my job throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Going forward, I'm sure this will not always work and I will have to do more research. For example, for Clockwork Caning, this is an historical piece and I have to do some research.
Excerpt from The ABCs of Erotica - R is for Revenge:

Grace pretended to pout. “Michael, really, tell me what you have planned.”
“I want it to be a surprise. And I think you will be surprised.” He smiled secretively.
“Give me an idea? Just a little one?”
“Grace, there’s a part of Victoria you don’t know about. There is a sort of stereotype, which happens to have a ring of truth to it in her case. She walks all over everyone. But honestly, what she wants is someone to stand up to her.”
“How do you know this?”
Michael shrugged. “Let’s just say, Victoria has another side. One I’ve never indulged with her before. But it’s there.”
The intercom buzzed. Michael answered the doorman and after a short conversation returned to the seating area. “She’s here.”
“She’s here? Victoria? Now?” Grace's voice rose in disbelief.
He opened the door to the coat closet. “What I want you to do is step in here.”
“What? What is Victoria doing here?” Grace’s stunned confusion made her clumsy as she stepped toward the closet.
He gestured inside. “Grace, come on. She’ll be here soon. Take your wine glass.”
Grace laughed. “Alright, fine. I’ll trust you on this one.” She entered the closet and pulled the door shut. The closet had louvered slats, and if she held her head just right, she had a good view of the living room area.
Grace heard a knock on the door and saw Michael go down the hall. A moment later she could hear murmuring voices. Michael and Victoria entered the living area.
“Victoria, would you like some wine?”
“Yes, that would be lovely.” Victoria removed her wrap and tossed it over the arm of the couch. “I was so pleasantly surprised at your invitation. We should have done this before.” Her voice was warm and welcoming. Grace had never heard Victoria use that tone before. She had certainly never used it toward her.
